Starters
Your factory starter is a key component when it comes to getting your engine moving. Also called a starter motor, self-starter, or cranking motor, it rotates – or cranks – your engine until it roars to life. Once that's accomplished, your starter's completed its task list.
A starter uses a relay and dedicated starter motor to get things going. You initiate this when you either press the "Start" button or turn your key in the ignition cylinder. A solenoid attached to your starter then pulls electricity from the battery and sends it to the starter. The starter gear kicks forward, connects to gear teeth on the engine's flywheel, and rotates the flywheel.
Even the best starter can go bad over time, unfortunately. Signs of this include:
- A clicking sound when you turn the key or press the button
- Inability to start your vehicle
- Only being able to start in certain gears
- The starter has smoke coming from it
- The starter is covered in oil
